In the early 1980’s the Port of Miami planned and invested in obtaining gantry cranes to unload and load ships carrying containers. These were PortMiami Gantry Cranes 1 , 2 and 3. However, as the containerize shipping industry developed and grew these cranes which were once state-of-art became nearly obselete as the ships calling on PortMiami quickly grew in the early 2000’s. As a result, PortMiami procured the new Super Post-panamax cranes which is now the standard for any major port.

As it was soon realized in the early 2000’s that cranes 1, 2 and 3 were to small for PortMiami’s growing industry. The Port thru its gocerning body, the County, auctioned and sold the three (3) cranes to Sociedad Portuaria del Norte (SPN) of Barranquilla, Colombia. As such, as a result of the sales, SPN has taken pocession of the cranes and shipped them to Barranquilla in which the three (3) cranes left Miami on June 4, 2013.
